Our first stop on Nov 3 was Nazare. It is on the Atlantic coast about 60 miles north of Lisbon. There are two upper cities and a lower city. The upper city which we visited, is on a cliff about 300 feet above the lower city. Nazare gets its name because of a statue being brought to the city from Nazarath. The Church in the first image is the Church of our lady of Nazarath (in Portuguese, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré).
The second, third and fourth images are of us at a parapet overlooking the Atlantic Ocean near lower Nazare.
The fifth and sixth images are us on the plaza which sits at the top of the cliff overlooking the Atlantic. It is a really beautiful view.
The seventh image shows Beth and George on the parapet, in the near background the lower city and in the far background a coastal mountain range.
In the eighth image, I got a shot of a para-glider and the beach. This beach is famous because at certain times, it gets enormous waves, over 50 feet and as high as 80 feet. This is because of the presence of a canyon near the shore which, at times creates conditions where waves are superimposed.
In the ninth image, I have a shot of an exhibit in a free museum near where our bus parked.
The museum also had a lot of information about how the waves got so big near the beach. A youtube of a surfer describing his wave riding experience at Nazare is here.
